The statue of the Virgin Mary that dominates the bell tower of the Notre-Dame-des-Doms metropolis in Avignon was added in 1859, at a time when Marian worship was highly popular. Almost 20 ft (6 m) high, the statue made of gilded lead regilded during the Great Jubilee of 2000 weighs 4.5 tons. The Virgin it depicts does not carry the Christ child but blesses the city with one hand and protects it with the other.
