Metz Cathedral is a vast and imposing monument whose nave peaks at 137 ft (41.41 m) in height. Like almost every church of Gothic architecture, it extends in the shape of a Latin cross. Its exterior adornments and its towers make it a showcase of Flamboyant Gothic at its peak. The whole edifice is supported by 34 pillars approximately 10 ft (3 m) in diameter. A legend tells that only a pact with the Devil could have inspired the dimensions of Saint Stephen Cathedral to its architect Pierre Perrat.
