Colossal work created to connect the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the Canal du Midi was designed in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet under the reign of Louis XIV. This monumental channel has 64 locks and is nearly 150 miles (240 km) long. Its construction took over 15 years and asked for the mobilization of 12,000 workers. The Canal du Midi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
