Multiform, Auvergne volcanism associates basaltic flows, maars and necks. The basaltic flows formed entablatures in the valleys and were cleared by a relief inversion. The maars consist of craters born from a brutal magmatic explosion that lined their periphery with characteristic deposits. As for the necks (photo), they correspond to the erosion of cones of viscous magmatic rises.
