The village-resort of La Grave (Hautes-Alpes) extends on the right bank of the Romanche upper valley. This 48.6 mi (78.3 km) long river has its source in the locality of Villar-d'Arêne at an altitude of 6,561 ft (2,000 m) and meets with the Drac between the towns of Champ-sur-Drac and Varces-Allières-et-Risset at 843 ft (257 m) above sea level. It first crosses La Grave in the Écrins National Park then the municipalities of Bourg-d'Oisans, Livet-et-Gavet, Vizille, and Champ-sur-Drac in the Isère department. Its valley, traversed by a departmental road, provides access to the Lautaret pass and joins the Guisane valley and Briançon from Grenoble.
