Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a rural village home to 2,055 inhabitants northwest of the Vaucluse department. It is located in the Rhône valley, 10 mi (17 km) north of Avignon and 6.2 mi (10 km) south of Orange. The 6,388-acre (2,585 ha) territory of Châteauneuf-du-Pape extends from 65 to 449 ft (20 to 137 m) above sea level, rising slightly in the northern part.
