The Gigondas AOC wine - solely produced in the municipality at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Vaucluse department - has made the eponymous village famous. It covers 3,040 acres (1,230 ha) of vineyards divided into two production zones: the sandy soils on limestone and marly subsoils of the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif and the stony soils of the high terrace of the Ouvèze, a tributary of the Rhône. The grape variety of the Gigondas vineyard gives pride of place to Grenache, supplemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, two classic grape varieties from the southern Rhône valley.
