Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire is a municipality of 1,235 inhabitants located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Renowned for having been chosen as the site of the Haute-Provence Observatory, the village, member of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, covers 6,865 acres (2,778 ha) between 1,266 and 2,516 ft (386 and 767 me) above sea level on the edge of the Monts de Vaucluse. It has preserved a built heritage that dates back to the Middle Ages and includes chapels, churches, towers, and mills. The village of Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire itself extends 1,781 ft (543 m) above sea level on a spur flank.
