The small town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence is circled by ramparts that protect the dwellings of the historic center gathered around Conversion-de-Saint-Paul Church. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, the monument was established as a collegiate church in 1666 at the instigation of Antoine Godeau, Bishop of Vence. Back then, the village, named Saint-Paul du Var, guarded the former border of the Var department with the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. Later called Saint-Paul and even Saintpaul during the French Revolution, the village has only been officially recognized as Saint-Paul-de-Vence since 2011.
