The village of Banon in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department moved during the 19th century. Between 1840 and 1880, the inhabitants began to abandon the tight habitat of the heights to settle near the crossroads of the roads of Sisteron, Apt, Manosque, and Forcalquier in a new district called the Bourgade. The lower part of the village then developed around the distillery created for lavender farming and the cheese dairy that annually produces 68 tons of the famous little goat's cheese wrapped in a dry chestnut leaf and tied with a raffia string.
