A quiet fishing village

The very quiet village of Tartane, which can be seen in the background of this aerial view, is the only village on the Caravelle peninsula, on the eastern coast of Martinique. Located 3.7 miles (6 km) southeast of La Trinité, the municipality of 3,000 inhabitants is known for its fishermen who, every morning, sell their fish at the auction on the beach. Relatively touristy due to its location on the Caravelle peninsula, which is particularly popular with hikers and water sports enthusiasts, Tartane is crossed by the departmental road that runs along the beach on one side and hosts several restaurants on the other. As for its former Gaston Hardy distillery, it can no longer be visited. The site was abandoned in 1996 in favor of the Saint-James distillery in Sainte-Marie. The road ends a few miles after Tartane at the entrance to the regional nature park of the Caravelle peninsula, organized through numerous marked trails.
