A village of legends

The town of Sainte-Enimie is located in the department of Lozère, Occitania region. This medieval village, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is nestled in the center of the ‘Gorges du Tarn’, one of the main French rivers, 236 miles (380 km) long, which has its source not far from Mount-Lozère. The village takes its name from the legend of Enimie, princess of royal blood and sister of King Dagobert I. This very pious princess wanted to devote her life to God but in view of her exceptional beauty, was condemned to an arranged marriage. An answered prayer causes her to lose this beauty by contracting leprosy so long as she remained outside of the miraculous place ‘Burlatis’ in the heart of the ‘Gorges du Tarn’. She therefore decided to see it as a divine sign, to evangelize the region and to found the monastery there on the heights of the village.
