A village of coppersmiths

Around 1130, the King of England and Duke of Normandy gave the hamlet of Villedieu-les-Saultchevreuil to the Brothers Hospitallers of Jerusalem, who took the name of Knights of the Order of Malta in 1530. The village soon prospered thanks to copper, present in the subsoil of the region. Its coppersmiths became increasingly renowned, and the village quickly took the name of Villedieu-les-Poêles. Today, the town perpetuates this tradition along its alleys and is labeled a Ville et Métiers d'Art (City and Art Trades).
