A rare architectural remnant

The Eau Bénite (Holy Water) bell tower, a detail of which appears here, is an octagonal bell tower with a slate-covered roof culminating at 196 ft (60 m). It is the only remnant of the three other bell towers of the monumental Maior Ecclesia of Cluny Abbey. The Eau Bénite (Holy Water) bell tower rises above the dome of the south arm of the large transept that illustrates the power of the architecture of the abbey. Its two floors of bays and columned arcades were completed around 1125.
