A cantle used as a fifth rein
0
0
The gardians (herdsmen) of Camargue sometimes use the right horn of their cantle (saddle back) as a fifth rein. If their mount responds poorly to orders or tries to unhorse them, the gardians hold the four reins (bridle and cavesson) with their left hand to control the animal and cling to the right horn of the cantle to remain on their seat and avoid the fall.
