In 1381, Metz city council decided to install its new belfry on Saint Stephen Cathedral due to lack of space. The tower was equipped with an 11 tons bell called the Mutte. Poorly designed, it was replaced 7 times in 600 years. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Mutte was not a religious bell but a tocsin harmonized in F sharp. When it was replaced thanks to cranes in 2020, the workers realized it actually weighed 8.7 tons. Nevertheless, its installation without modern equipment in 1381 was a major tour de force. The 295 ft tower (90 m) remained a property of the city whose flag still flies at the top.
