A classic Italian-style theater

Now in ruins, the Saint-Pierre theater in Martinique was a classic Italian-style theater built on a scale model of the Bordeaux theater during the fourth quarter of the 18th century. Its semicircular floor surrounded by boxes could accommodate eight hundred spectators. It opened onto a rectangular stage preceded by a vestibule and a peristyle. Access was via a series of three steps from what is now Rue Victor Hugo in the Fort Saint-Pierre district. An essential element of the city then nicknamed the capital of the Lesser Antilles, this theater born of the private initiative of four local merchants testified to the enrichment of the locality thanks to the sugar trade.
