A vast and diverse territory

Gascony forms a vast territory in southwestern France which brings together the Landes, Gers, Ariège, Hautes-Pyrénées, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Haute-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, and Tarn-et-Garonne departments. It owes its name to the Gascons or Vascons, a people from the Iberian Peninsula who invaded Aquitaine under pressure from the Visigoths. Its location between the Garonne and the Pyrenees gives Gascony a great diversity of landscapes. Viticulture is very present there (wines of Bordeaux, Armagnac, Jurançon) as well as cereal, vegetable, and fruit cultivation (valleys of the Garonne and the Adour). The Atlantic coast also constitutes a major tourist area for the region.
