Built in the 12th century, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle has witnessed many conflicts and rivalries between lords, kings and emperors. After various owners succeeded one another, the castle was abandoned for two centuries, until its reconstruction by Wilhelm II in 1900. From the top of its 2,483 ft (757 m), the castle still dominates the plain of Alsace.
