The diet of the greater flamingo (Phœnicopterus roseus) is highly specialized. Based on crustaceans, invertebrates, larvae, eggs, and aquatic plants, it makes the flamingo particularly vulnerable in the event of unavailability of resources, especially during harsh winters. The flamingo feeds by filtrating the water and silt from the lagoons and brackish ponds thanks to its very innervated beak equipped with lamellae functioning like whales' baleens. A special adaptation of its beak also allows the flamingo to evacuate the salt contained in the passing water.
