A bastioned system built in several stages

The main construction campaigns of the Mont-Dauphin stronghold in the Hautes-Alpes department took place during the last quarter of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The Eygliers front, with its two forward redoubts, was completed in 1707, and the Embrun front was closed in 1717. The Lunette 64, the main advanced work of the central bastion of the Eygliers front, dates from the same period. In the 19th century, additional works (counterguards, batteries, artillery shoulders) reinforced the bastioned system of Mont-Dauphin. Most of the fortifications and military buildings were listed as Historical Monuments in 1966.
