Dominating the Alsace plain, the Haut-Koenigsbourg is the most famous fortified castle in the region. Since its construction in the Middle Ages, it has always stood over the village of Orschwiller. During its history, it alternated between French and German domination depending on the outcomes of conflicts. The castle was damaged and nearly destroyed several times but always reconstructed. Classified as a Historic Monument, the Haut-Koenigsbourg is one of the symbols of Alsace.
