A symbol of imperial legitimacy

In 1900, both Alsace and the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle were part of Germany, and Kaiser Wilhelm II decided to renovate the ruins of the fortress. The keep was to be the symbol of its new owner's power and was the first part to be restored. The imperial eagle with outstretched wings was attached to its summit in 1906, where it still stands today. Wilhelm II wanted to assert the legitimacy of the Hohenzollerns in the continuity of the other German imperial dynasties.
