A symbol of authority over the Church

The castle of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Vaucluse department was built in 1195 by Raymond VI (1156-1222). Count of Toulouse from 1194 until his death, he wished to assert his authority over the Church and particularly Bérenger de Reilhane, the bishop of Vaison from 1185 to 1190. The castle stands on a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Ouvèze, from where it dominates the medieval city established on the southern slope.
