An explosive-type gray stratovolcano

Located in the north of Martinique on the territory of the municipality of Saint-Pierre, Mount Pelée is the highest point of the island, at 4,583 ft (1,397 m) above sea level. This 6.8 to 9.3 miles (11 to 15 km) in diameter gray stratovolcano covers an area of 74.5 square miles (120 km²). Since its last magmatic eruption in 1932, it has displayed a lava dome at its summit center. This explosive-type active volcano, which has experienced numerous magmatic and phreatic eruptions in the past, gave its name to the so-called Pelean eruptive type. Although its seismic activity is now considered low, it remains under surveillance by the Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de Martinique (OVSM).
