The builders of the fortified castle of Guédelon scrupulously respect the artisanal methods of the Middle Ages and work without electricity, excavators, drills, etc. Beyond the tools, the very objects that would harm the authenticity of the site and of the project are prohibited. A letter sent by the project management to the volunteers working on the construction site establishes a list of forbidden objects like sneakers, tobacco, fancy shirts, tricolor socks, garish colors, or watches. Big shoes and glasses are tolerated, and light-colored overalls (blouses), neutral-colored clothing, and gaiters to hide the shoes are recommended.
