The Côte de Nuits terroir was formed 175 million years ago, while Côte de Beaune's is younger (25 million years). Their soils consist of an agglomerate of scree which has generated rendzines, a soil rich in humus and organic matter on a limestone bedrock. The roots of the vine can sometimes go down to 32 ft (10 m) and draw from the soil what makes the character of the wines of Burgundy.
