The Croix de Provence that dominates the western end of the Sainte-Victoire mountain in the Bouches-du-Rhône department rests on a four-sided plinth. Each side is engraved with an inscription in a different language. The north face, facing Paris, signals in French that the monument was blessed by Mgr Théodore Augustin Forcade, Archbishop of Aix, Arles, and Embrun, on May 18, 1875. The west side, oriented towards Aix-en-Provence, bears an inscription in Provençal reminding of the fidelity of the region towards God. On the east face, facing Rome, the Latin message refers to the guidance of the souls by the light of the cross. Finally, the south side oriented towards Marseille is engraved with a Greek inscription depicting the rewards of the sailors, merchants, and workers for their labor and faith.
