In 1967, the town of Dole created a remarkable heritage site to protect the entire old town and its surroundings over an area of 114 hectares. Slowed down by the concomitant large-scale Rhône-Rhine canal project, this safeguard and enhancement plan was approved in 1993. Each building in the old center is designated there as to be preserved, restored or destroyed and the architect of the buildings of France is the guarantor of the respect of the heritage of the site, on behalf of the State.
