Madine Lake and its satellite ponds are of prime importance for their numerous aquatic avifauna. They extend on the Woëvre plain, which is the first wintering area in France. It is not unusual to observe greylag geese, white-fronted geese, and, occasionally, common cranes there. Three emblematic Lorraine species also station on Madine Lake's waters: the little bittern, the western-marsh harrier, and the little crake. They nest there every year alongside swans and black kites.
