The ancient site of Vaison-la-Romaine has been known since the 15th century, following numerous fortuitous discoveries that confirmed its importance. More systematically excavated in the 20th century by Canon Joseph Sautel from 1907 to 1955 and then by Christian Goudineau in the 1970s, it keeps unveiling its remains. Archaeological diagnostic operations carried out in 2011 revealed parts of the forum and the amphitheater, and experts believe that 4/5ths of the 150 to 173 acres (60 to 70 ha) of the site remain to be discovered.
