Houlgate beach in the Calvados department is not just a vast expanse of sand that stretches as far as the eye can see at low tide. At the level of the Vaches Noires cliffs, it is renowned for its geological richness dating back to the Jurassic period and has revealed fossils, ammonites, and even the remains of dinosaurs. This classified site of scientific and landscape interest is run by the Geo-Paleo-Archaeological Association of Houlgate, which organizes outings there. Walkers can also stroll along the beach to Villers-sur-Mer, after finding out about the tide times, and returning by inland paths.
