Aged 88, Robert Marichy is an institution in the world of Jura woodturners. He has perpetuated an ancient tradition initiated in the 5th century and has only ever known his father's workshop, established in an 1830 farmhouse. Though he shows his know-how to visitors, he has no one to pass it on and take over the workshop. Woodturning was among the main activities practiced in the Petite Montagne from the 19th century to the 1970s. There were nearly 8,000 woodturners in the Jura alone during the interwar period.
