The explosion of perfumery in Grasse in the 19th century transformed the region into a huge flower garden in which the noses of the great perfume houses select the best scents and combine them to create new fragrances. The cultivation of perfume plants - here lavender - has, therefore, become as essential as the knowledge of the products and tools necessary for their transformation. It requires skills in botany but also a perfect mastery of the soils and climate of the region. Producers and growers have often joined forces in cooperatives and associations to perpetuate the perfume tradition of the city.
