Separated from the Causse de Gramat by the Alzou stream, Rocamadour is a medieval town emblematic of the Lot department. The municipality clings to the side of the cliff over 492 ft (150 m) and three levels up to its 14th-century castle. The sanctuary consists of the Saint-Sauveur basilica, the crypt of Saint-Amadour, and seven chapels. Notre-Dame chapel houses a statue of the Black Virgin, the protector of sailors revered for more than a thousand years. Rocamadour constitutes a step on the way to Santiago de Compostela.
