A holy desert

Located 7.4 mi (12 km) from Collobrières, the Chartreuse de la Verne dominates a landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see from the Mediterranean Sea and the bay of Saint-Tropez to the east to the French Prealps of Digne and Nice to the north. These austere and wild expanses are covered with forests of arbutus, cork oaks, ancient chestnut trees, and tangles of cistus, broom, mastic, and heather. They combine to create the monastic space of holy desert necessary for the life of solitude and contemplation of the members of the Order of Bethlehem, the Assumption of the Virgin, and Saint Bruno.
