The buttresses that support the choir of the abbey church are one of the characteristics of Gothic art. Instead of adding a decorative touch, their role is precisely functional: to counteract the external thrust of the upper parts of the building. The staircase with its lace railings allows access to the bell tower from the east. Its narrowness can be explained by the fact that it is built on a buttressed arch. From the outside, the abbey church is supported by a superimposition of buttresses decorated at the top with exuberant vegetal decorations that contrast with the sobriety of the church’s interior.
