A giant rock on a strategic location

On the slope of Puech of Fontaneilles, more than 1,850 ft (564 m) above the Tarn valley, the Château de Peyrelade allowed absolute control over the entrance to the Gorges. It seems like a giant rock hiding a staircase tower whose wooden cladding has been reconstituted. It also contained an oven, a cistern, and a belfry whose bell alerted the peasants of the village below. Sections of ramparts with guard towers are still visible today. After passing to the English, then to the Huguenots (Protestants) and the Catholics during the French Wars of Religion, the Château de Peyrelade was dismantled by order of Richelieu in 1633.
