An essential local ritual

Strolling through the Old Port of Marseille in the early morning is a sort of ritual for the inhabitants and tourists in search of authenticity in one of the last spots of local folklore. A fish market made up of a dozen stalls depending on the abundance of fishing is held there every morning of the week. For professional buyers, the wholesale fish market was transferred in 1976 near L'Estaque on the port of Saumaty that covers 10 acres (4 ha) of basins and 10 acres (4 ha) of land and accommodates a small fishing fleet.
