Imposing but relatively light, the Camargue bull (raço di biòu) is 4.5 ft (1.40 m) tall on average for 881 lbs (400 kg). Its vertical lyre-shaped horns constitute its most notable features. The natural aggressiveness of the young bull is subdued by the gardian (herdsman) with a blow of a ferri or ficheiroun (small trident with short points) on its muzzle. This gesture, particularly dangerous for humans when practiced on foot, is the subject of demonstrations during bullfighting events. It represents the main rite of passage to the gardian status for the gardianoun (young gardian).
