The sculpted decoration of the Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo is exceptionally lavish. It prefigures that of the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, twenty years later. The paintings are surrounded by stucco sculptures of mythological figures. The coat of arms of the king is accompanied by cherubs. Captives chained to the four corners of the gallery evoke the course of the sun as it travels through the four parts of the world. The lower part of the vault shows the golden allegories of each month and the astrological signs. Women with butterfly wings flutter between the coffers in a profusion of garlands and rosettes.
