An altarpiece dedicated to the Last Judgment

0
The polyptych of the Last Judgment commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, founder of the Hospices of Beaune, from the Brussels artist Rogier van der Weyden, hung above the altar in the chapel of the Grande Salle des Pôvres (Great Hall of the Poor). It was open to the sight of the sick only on Sundays and feast days. Closed, the altarpiece represents at each of its ends Nicolas Rolin and his third wife, Guigone de Salins, kneeling in prayer, facing each other. Between them are depicted in trompe-l'oeil four scenes of Christ on the Cross, the Annunciation, Saint Sebastian (patron of chivalry of Chancellor Rolin), and Saint Anthony (patron of the Hôtel-Dieu and Guigone de Salins) accompanied by his pig.
