At the origin of the Camargue race is the bullfighting game, appreciated since the Middle Ages by El Cid and Emperor Charles V. Various animals and farmhands mingled to fight and play with the bulls. The oldest evidence on the genesis of Camargue races dates back to 1402 in Arles, where a race was organized in honor of Louis II, Count of Provence. Towards the end of the 19th century, these circus games were violently criticized, and the bullfighting gave way to a single man facing the bull.
