An unusual relief

The northernmost area of the Zekreet Peninsula is called Ras Abrouq (or Cape Abrouq). It is a vast expanse of desert land north of Dukhan in western Qatar. Known for its wild beaches and archaeological sites, this 12.4 miles (20 km) by 6.2 miles (10 km) area has been attracting tourists since the 2000s. The peninsula is home to the protected Brouq Nature Reserve, where oryx and ostriches can be seen. In 2014, the four-steel plate sculpture “West-East/East-West” by the American Richard Serra was installed there, as a symbolic connection between the Gulf of Bahrain to the west and the Persian Gulf to the east. The area is characterised by a relief of a few metres, unusual in Qatar, sculpted by erosion in the form of geological mushrooms and white limestone cliffs.
