The historical axis of Paris, or Voie Royale, ends in the business district of La Défense, at the foot of its Grande Arche. It is an innovative hive of activity that mixes tourists, businessmen, and employees in a continuous bustle. The futuristic towers are built around a vast 31-hectare esplanade, entirely pedestrianised and partly planted with trees. The district is divided into five sectors: the Neuilly crossroads, the Takis basin, the esplanade and its picnic areas lined with low-rise towers, the Place de la Défense and its RER station – lined with high towers – and finally the Parvis de La Défense, with the CNIT and the Grande Arche.
