The La Défense district extends to the west of Paris over the municipalities of Puteaux, Courbevoie, Nanterre and La Garenne-Colombes. Its surface area of 0.62 sq. miles (1.6 km²) makes it the largest business district in Europe. It brings together a wide range of business sectors: finance, automobile manufacturing, pharmaceutical research, energy, transport and logistics. The district was created in 1958 with the construction of the CNIT (Centre des Nouvelles Industries et Technologies). The first office buildings were built in 1964. The creation of the 4 Temps shopping centre in 1980, followed by the Grande Arche in 1989, gave new impetus to the district.
