A wealthy and lively ancient neighborhood

The archaeological site of La Villasse in Vaison-la-Romaine corresponds to a rich and particularly lively district of the Roman city. It mixed streets, shops, and spa complex with large mansions facing their inner courtyards that testified to a luxury reserved for wealthy populations. The Rue des Boutiques (Shops Street), made up of large limestone slabs arranged irregularly to reduce the jolting of cartwheels, was an essential north-south axis of the ancient city. Walked by the inhabitants to go to the thermal baths, it was bordered to the east by a wide sidewalk and to the west by a pedestrian gallery sheltered from bad weather and sun.
