Considered the most emblematic fortified castle in Alsace, the Haut-Koenigsbourg was thoroughly restored at the request of Kaiser Wilhelm II from 1900 to 1908. First called Staufenberg at the time of its construction, the castle included fortifications from 1147. It used to monitor the road linking Alsace from north to south and the main axes from east to west. Today, the Haut-Koenigsbourg's ramparts extend over 885 feet (270 meters), dominating the Alsace plain.
