A port founded by the Phoenicians

The town of Port-Vendres in the Pyrénées-Orientales department has an ancient history that goes back to Antiquity. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC and was then the only trading port linking the Western world to its Eastern counterpart in Roussillon. The current town of Port-Vendres was officially created in 1823 from territories taken from the neighboring towns of Collioure and Banyuls-sur-Mer. The name of the municipality comes from the Latin Portus Veneris (Port of Venus), an ancient reference found on Port-Vendres' coat of arms.
