Founded by King Francis I in 1517, Le Havre was formerly called Le Havre de Grâce. The French sovereign wanted a haven of peace to protect Paris from the English ambitions. He chose a cove sheltered from storms but experiencing a powerful high tide. The King baptized the site Haven of Grace and had Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Chapel built. The city quickly developed and took on the name Le Havre in 1793 during the French Revolution.
